Fourth Finnish Bird Atlas 2022–2025, observations from FinBIF Notebook

Description

The Finnish Bird Atlas studies the breeding distribution and breeding areas of bird species in 10 x 10 kilometer atlas squares in Finland, and studies changes in species distributions. Three bird atlases have been carried out in Finland previously (the first 1974–79, the second 1986–89 and the third 2006–2010). This material contains observations from the bird atlas form of the Vihko observation service. The material has been collected by volunteer birdwatchers. The Bird Atlas consists of several materials and this material accounts for approximately 30%. This material also includes observations recorded on the bird atlas form of species groups other than birds. Observations recorded in this material are immediately available on the Laji.fi portal, excluding sensitive data. Data quality: The data has been collected by registered non-professionals who are typically experienced birdwatchers. Non-systematic data curation is done by volunteer atlas coordinators from local ornithological societies.

Sampling Description

Sampling

Typically, volunteer observers record the birds they see and/or hear with a breeding index that specifies the degree of evidence of breeding (https://schema.laji.fi/alt/MY.atlasCodeEnum). The observers may also report whether they conducted a comprehensive survey of birds for a specific time and place (complete list) rather than simply incidental records. Methods are described in more detail in Valkama, Jari, Vepsäläinen, Ville & Lehikoinen, Aleksi 2011: Suomen III Lintuatlas. – Luonnontieteellinen keskusmuseo ja ympäristöministeriö. (cited 2023-04-26) ISBN 978-952-10- 6918-5.
