The data were originally collected for a wide variety of purposes, including campaigning on local conservation issues, teaching at Cardiff University, reference material for various books and other publications.

The data has been checked with NBN Records Cleaner. The records have also been checked by the volunteers and LERC staff, so whilst the dataset is largely unverified by County Recorders, it has passed through some verification processes.Method steps
- Data have been collated from a wide range of direct observation sources. Method and spatial accuracy of records vary by individual recorder.
