GBIF Colombia has successfully led training in the private sector of the Spanish-speaking community around data publishing and use, through virtual courses, documentation, and mentoring.

Build of those experiences, Costa Rica and Guatemala will, as mentees, benefit to develop their strategies with to engage private companies in their countries, as well as other participants from Latin American and the Caribbean.

The project will feature written and video contents, self-assessments to track progress, short how-to videos about tools and processes (e.g. https://youtu.be/0ACuhqiB1_Q) and hands-on exercises to practice with specific data from the private sector. These materials will be reusable by other GBIF nodes.

The participation of partners from the private sector is crucial to the project’s success. In Colombia, the National Business Association of Colombia (ANDI) and GeoPark Colombia will support the activities by identifying the specific needs of their sector.

Project progress

At final reporting the project partners had carried out different actions oriented towards four proposed goals.

1 - Transfer information, experience, and best practices to the Costa Rica, Guatemala and Ecuador nodes for the construction of a national community of data publishers from the business sector was completed with the project team having held three online meetings. The first established the roadmap, the second involved the first mentoring, which was conducted in two sessions, and the third focused on follow-up and providing further guidance.

2 - The project created a virtual course for the business sector on publication, access, and use of shared data through GBIF, and launched two versions of the course.

The first was based on the needs and legislation of the Colombian business sector and was announced and launched for Colombia in November 2022. Grouped in a training program called “Gestión corporativa para la naturaleza: ruta de formación para movilizar datos sobre biodiversidad”, the course structure consisted of five courses:
Course 1. Business and biodiversity: fundamentals for publishing data with value.
Course 2. Learning a new language: introduction to the Darwin Core.
Course 3. Hands on! how to use the Darwin Core.
Course 4. Data Metamorphosis: transforming a GDB to the Darwin Core.
Course 5. Open data and collection permits.

The second was oriented towards the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) business community and was announced and launched for LAC countries in January 2024. Grouped in a training programme called “Ruta de Formación en movilización de datos del sector empresarial LAC”, the course structure consisted of four courses
Course 1. GBIF Sector empresarial - ABC para publicar datos
Course 2. GBIF Sector empresarial - Aprende sobre el Darwin Core
Course 3. GBIF Sector empresarial - Uso del Darwin Core
Course 4. GBIF Sector empresarial - Últimos clics

Available through the e-learning platform https://aprende.biodiversidad.co/, the courses have already at final reporting more than 350 participants, and 479 certificates had been issued through the e-learning platform.

In parallel to the self-paced training, 17 short videos, divided into three tutorials, were produced:

  1. Tutorials for biodiversity data access and use
  2. Tutorials for publishing open data through SiB Colombia
  3. Tutorials for reporting data associated with harvesting permits

3 - A total of 47 datasets and 242, 897 occurrences were mobilized by the nodes involved in the project, 26 from Colombia, 17 from Guatemala, and 4 from Ecuador, and one dataset from Panamá, which shows interest after the invitation made to Colombian companies with subsidiaries in other Latin American countries.

4 - A virtual training reference guide was also created using the experience of the Colombian node, sharing examples and a set of best practices for planning, and developing virtual courses.

Post project, it is envisaged by the project to launch new cohorts for the courses and to maintain the multifaceted communication strategy used by the project to highlight updates in the future about new course content and calls.
